Upload Images/Media/Files

With Simple:Press Forum 4.1 and above, you now have the ability to upload images, media and other files directly within a post.

The ability to upload files to a Simple:Press Forum installation is governed by permissions. At no time, will guests be allowed to upload files. Different options can be granted for images, media and files. You can set the permissions on the Forum ☛ Permissions ☛ Manage Permissions panel. Also, file uploading is only supported from within the TinyMCE editor.

Before file uploading can commence, you must configure the Forum ☛ Components ☛ Uploading Options panel. You must also configure the storage locations for upload storage on the Forum ☛ Configuration ☛ Storage Locations panel.

Once everything is configured, you can upload images via the ‘insert image’ button on the TinyMCE toolbar. You can upload media via the ‘insert media’ button on the TinyMCE toolbar. You can upload other file types by highlighting text in your post and selecting the ‘insert link’ button on the TinyMCE toolbar.

PHP requires a large amount of memory to handle image processing, especially to create thumbnails. And, of course, the bigger the original image (in file size – not height and width) the more memory is consumed.
It is strongly recommended that image size be restricted to encourage your users to size images properly and compress them prior to uploading. Large files do run the risk of failure during the thumbnail creation phase which may lock those images out of the File Manager browser.

Remember also that large image files have to be downloaded for your visitors to view them. An image of, say. 1 megabyte will use up the equivalent amount of your bandwidth allowance each and every time a visitor views it!
